In North Kingstown, north of Gilbert Stuart Road, is the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum, which has a dam between two mills.

To get to the dam, from Route 138, take Boston Neck Road south to Snuff Mill Road. Take a right and drive on this road to a sharp right curve, then take a left onto Gilbert Stuart Road, and drive to the is road to the museum on the right and a parking lot on the left.

The dam on Gilbert Stuart Brook, also known as Mattatuxet River, impounds water known both as Gilbert Stuart Pond or Carr Pond. The dam is 10 ft high and 60 ft long. It is made of both earthen wooden components, and has four sluice gates. These gates raise flashboards that control the flow of water to the water wheels on both mills. According to one site, the pond (the larger part not visible from the dam) has a surface area of 54 acres. The same site stated that construction, presumably of the dam, was completed in 1800. The mills are known to have been around at least since 1752, so the dam might have been much earlier.
