The town of Deep River was founded originally by fisherman immigrants from Finland in the 1890s. Following the Finns were Swedish immigrants who became lumberjacks, and built the town on pilings on the marshy land at the edge of the tidal estuary. Deep River Cemetery was built on a hill above the town, and with the church below are the only things remaining of the town. The cemetery is still used by the members of the Lutheran church, who work ranches in the vicinity. The cemetery has approximately 200 graves, and is not actually marked with any signs.
