Ramon Llull, the son of a Catalan knight, was born into a wealthy family in Palma, the capital of the new Kingdom of Majorca founded by James I. Llull was well educated, and became the tutor of James II of Aragon.
In 1263 he had a religious epiphany in which he saw Christ crucified next to him. Llull radically changed his life, he became a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis and travelled as a missionary through the entire Mediterranean region. He also taught at the universities of Paris and Montpellier. He was influenced by three cultures: the Christian, the Islamic and the Jewish. He wrote most of his over 280 works in Latin and Catalan. So Llull was the founder of Catalan literature.
At the age of 82, in 1314, Ramon Llull travelled again to North Africa and an angry crowd of Muslims stoned him in the city of Béjaïa in present-day northern Algeria. Genoese merchants took him back to Mallorca where he died at home in Palma the next year.
Within the Catholic Church he is honoured as a martyr, he was beatified in 1857 by Pope Pius IX.

The statue, made of stone on a limestone base, stands in the courtyard of the monastery Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Cura. Llull lived here as a hermit and worked here for almost ten years. The Statue shows an elderly wise man with pen and paper role, looking into the distance. It is not signed and dated.
