The Laos National Museum is located near the centre of the capital of Laos, Vientiane. The Museum building itself looks just a little worn, however, the contents are wide and diverse, showcasing the history and culture of Laos.
According to the museum pamphlet (in gallery), the Museum building has had a varied history. Constructed in 1925, during the French era, the building has subsequently been used as the residence of the King and the Prime Minister, the site of the 1945 Laos declaration of independence, and as a revolutionary museum. It was in 2000 that the building took on its current incarnation, as the Laos National Museum.
The range of exhibits are wide and diverse, and include a sizeable number of original artefacts. The various galleries in the museum display the different historical epochs of Laos, beginning with the pre-historic era, stepping forward in time to the revolutionary wars against France and the west. The exhibits are marked in a Laos, French, and English. There is a strict no photography policy.
The Museum presents its contents well, certainly worth a visit, even with the restrictive photographic policy. No website, entry $1.
