The Vientiane Province of Laos contains the national capital of Vientiane, and is the economic powerhouse of the country. Bordering the province to the north is the province of Luang Prabang, which contains the tourist drawcard town of the same name. There is a long and sinuous border between these two provinces, marked by high hills, lots of jungle, and a single road snaking its way north and south between China and Thailand.

The border point between the provinces is marked by the village of Vieng Kham, and a large, blue sign, welcoming incoming travellers to the province.
