This monument is dedicated to the 96th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 96th Illinois Infantry was organized at Rockford, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on September 6, 1862. Their commander, Colonel Thomas E. Champion.

Short Physical Description

7'6" x 4'4" x 4'6" high rock-faced monument consisting of rectangular granite block with an inscribed polished front on granite base. The tops of both pieces are beveled. Marks unit's position on Snodgrass Hill.
