The Rochdale canal is 32 miles long and connects Manchester on the west side of the Pennine Hills and Sowerby Bridge on the east side.
This bridge was rebuilt in 1905 by the corporation of Manchester to carry Minshull Street across the canal.

At this point the canal is running through the centre of Manchester, and is hemmed in by buildings and roads. The road that runs alongside the canal here is unsurprisingly called Canal Street. At many points the canal is at a lower level than the nearby roads but here it is at the same level as the canal and rises slightly at the bridge.
The canal was completed in 1804, and the date on this bridge indicates that it had to be rebuilt in 1905.
There is a date stone on the side of the bridge facing the canal, and a second identical one on the road side of the bridge.
The text on the bridge is as follows.
