Built in the late 12th century as the official state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom.
The Bayon is a well-known and richly decorated Khmer temple, featuring over 200 huge enigmatic stone faces and also two impressive sets of bas-reliefs, which present a combination of mythological, historic and mundane scenes.
The bas-reliefs on the southern wall contain real-life scenes from the historical sea battle between the Khmer and the Cham. Even more interesting are extensive carvings of unique and revealing scenes of everyday life that are interspersed among the battle scenes, including market scenes, cockfighting, chess games and childbirth.
The coordinates were taken at the eastern causeway entrance of the temple.
