This monument is dedicated to the 51st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry
is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga
, fought September 19–20, 1863. The 51st Illinois Infantry was organized at Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on December 24, 1861.
This monument indicates their position from Saturday 19th at 4 p.m. until Sunday, September 20, 1863, 4 a.m.

Short Significance Description:
|Marker contributes to national significance of park under NR Criterion A because it represents the national movement among veterans & related groups to commemorate Civil War battlefields. This was the first U.S. national military park.
Short Physical Description
7'6" x 4'4" x 4'6" high rock-faced monument consisting of rectangular granite block with an inscribed polished front on granite base. The tops of both pieces are beveled. Marks unit's position from 9/19 at 4:00 p.m. to 9/20/1863 at 4:00 a.m.
