The plaque is hidden behind the gallery sign and try as we might we could not move it! It reads as follows:

'MARY TOURTEL
1874 - 1948
Creator of Rupert Bear
studied art here
c. 1891 - 1896'

Mary lived in Ivy Lane and is buried in St Martin's churchyard. She studied art here, being taught by Thomas Sidney Cooper. Mary created and illustrated the famous Rupert Bear.
