This arch was erected by Deal Borough
Council in 1971 as a memorial to a former member of the Council, Miss Margaret
Webber. it is sited as an entrance archway into Marke Wood, a large recreation
area off Dover Road at Walmer, Kent.
A bronze plaque attached to one of the
pillars reads;
THIS MEMORIAL ARCHWAY / IS IN MEMORY OF THE LATE / MISS MARGARET WEBBER / MEMBER
OF THE DEAL BOROUGH COUNCIL / 1966 - 1971
Marke Wood was gifted to the people of Deal in 1927 by the late Agnes Marke Wood
of Walmer Place. There is a central pavilion for the
sports grounds that are approached by avenues of ash, lime and alder. Cypress,
birches, cherries and hawthorns are planted on the boundary. Behind the Memorial
Arch is a brick built pagoda surrounded by a formal design rose garden which has
been planted on former allotment grounds, and has over 3000 roses planted in it.
