The Founding of the Site of Innisfail
Stage coaches and freight wagons were transporting back and forth from Fort Calgary to Fort Edmonton on the Calgary-Edmonton Trail. A popular trail with the pioneers resulted in stopping houses appearing in the 1880s. "Stopping houses were places where the settlers could receive food and shelter as they passed through. The Innisfail area was originally known as Poplar Grove and more settlers from around the world came to the area."
Today Innisfail is a growing community with a population of 7,876 (2011 census) has agriculture and oil and gas playing important roles in the economic viability of the community.
The town hall building is located in the central portion of town. It is utilitarian in nature with a brick and stained cedar exterior that is as practical as the community in lower maintenance requirements. There are several nearby buildings that make this area the centre of the community. Nearby you will find the Legion, Fire Hall, Seniors Centre and local business shopping.
