This castle belongs to the so-called rock castles. A rock castle is a type of medieval castle which directly incorporates natural rock formations into its defences to such an extent that the rock formations define the structure of the castle. Rock castles usually don't had a brick wall. They could had walled palace, which was sometimes the only building of the castle core.
The ruins of Frýdštejn Castle can be found in the Liberec Region, near the town Turnov. A typical rock castle, it lies on the upper end of a long sandstone rock ridge, next to the village of Frýdštejn (former Zásada). The castle dominates the nearby Jizera river valley and the old trade route from Turnov to the north.
Frýdštejn was constructed during 14th century (exact date is not known). It is mentioned for the first time in a church source from 1385. Being owned by a Catholic it was besieged by Hussites in August 1432 but its lord had agreed to cease hostilities and later joined the Hussites. The castle had changed owners several times. After a sale in 1556 it lost its function as a watchtower and at the end of 16th century it was no longer inhabited. During the Thirty Years' War marauders, deserters, and fugitives of every kind found shelter here.

Tento hrad patrí k tzv. skalním hradum. Skalní hrad je druh stredovekého hradu, která prímo zahrnuje prirozené skalní útvary na jeho obranu do té míry, že skalní útvary definovat strukturu hradu.
Skalní hrady zpravidla nemely zdenou hradbu. Zdený mohl být palác, který byl nekdy jedinou budovou hradního jádra. To platí napr. pro tento hrad.
Zrícenina hradu Frýdštejn se nachází v Libereckém kraji, nedaleko mesta Turnova.Typický skalní hrad, leží na horním konci dlouhého hrebene pískovcové skály, u obce Frýdštejn (dríve Zásada). Hrad je dominantou okolí údolí Jizery a leží na staré obchodní ceste z Turnova na sever.
Frýdštejn byl postaven v 14. století (presné datum není známo). Prvne je zmínen v církevních knihách z roku 1385. Hrad byl vlastnen katolíky a tak byl také obléhán husity v srpnu 1432. Hradní pán ale nakonec souhlasil s ukoncením boju a pozdeji se sám dokonce pripojil k husitum.
Hrad nekolikrát zmenil majitele. Po prodeji v roce 1556 ztratil svou funkci strážní veže a na konci 16. století byl již neobydlen. Behem tricetileté války zde našli útocište záškodníci, dezertéri a uprchlíci všeho druhu.
