The plaque to the 4th Indiana Battery is in a clearing north of Winfrey’s Field on Brotherton Rd, Chickamauga National Battlefield (see directions @ end). This marker describes the actions of the 4th on Saturday, September 19th, 1863.

This plaque indicates the position of the 4th Independent Battery Indiana Light Artillery , on September 20 during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The background is blue indicating the was a Federal unit. The battery was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana and mustered into Federal Service on September 30, 1861. This marker describes the actions of the 4th on Saturday, September 19th, 1863.

Fourth Battery Indiana Light Artillery.
2 Napoleons, 2 12 PDR. Howitzers, 2 James Rifles.
Starkweather’s Brigade, Baird’s Division, Thomas’ Corps.
September 19, 1863
1st Lieut. David Flansburg, Commandinmg (Wounded and Captured).
2D Lieut. Henry J. Willits.
2D Lieut. Willis H. Pettit.
On the evening of the 18th the battery with its brigade left the vicinity of Owins’ Ford on the Chickamauga after an all night's March via Crawfish Spring and Widow Glenn’s arrived at Kelley's cross-roads about daybreak and took position in line of battle with the reserve of the division. At 10 A.M. moved with brigade first to the sport of the 1st and 3rd brigades; thence to the left to relieve Col. Croxton, commanding 2D brigade, 3D division, who was out of ammunition. Upon relieving Croxton the brigade and battery were almost immediately struck in front and flank by the advance of Govan’s brigade and five guns of the battery were captured which were almost immediately retaken by the advance of Croxton’s brigade. The loss of men, horses and harnesses prevented Lieut. Willits from sustaining his position.
He consequently moved to the rear, but soon reentered the field with four guns and by order retired at dark. Casualties: Lieut. Flansburg wounded and captured; 1 man killed and 9 men and wounded.
Directions: I parked at the Winfrey Field on Brotherton Rd. There are several monuments along the north side of Winfrey Field. Take the path along the western edge of the field to the 33rd Ohio Infantry Regiment Marker. There is a second trail along the northern edge of the field, follow this path to the 93rd Ohio Infantry Regiment Monument. Just west of this monument, there is a trail leading in to the wooded area north of the Winfrey Field. Follow this path until it intersects another path at the Twenty-Fourth Illinois Infantry Marker. Head west to the clearing.
