This outhouse came from Mr. O. Lee Flow Jr. in 2005. Mr. Flow remembered the outhouse was purchased from the WPA in the late 1930s. This now sits in Mint Hill at the Mint Hill Country Doctor's Museum.

When grandpa said he was going to visit 'Uncle John' everyone knew he was heading to 'the necessary house', commonly known as 'the outhouse'. Before indoor plumbing, the outhouse was in the backyard and placed a very respectable distance from the home.
Before Zeth Wheeler began selling bathroom tissue on a roll, the old Sears catalog and corncobs served the outhouse. Bathroom tissue was wrapped in brown paper and kept behind the store owner's counter so proper ladies would not be offended.
