This is the original bell from HMS Canterbury. She belonged to the British Royal Navy and was a C-class light cruiser equipped with six torpedo tubes.

HMS Canterbury was completed in October 1914 and became part of the Grand Fleet where she saw action in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 during World War I. She then defended the English Channel and sank the German torpedo boat S20 before heading to the Aegean in 1918.

By 1934 she was obsolete and was broken up, upon sale in 1934, by the Metal Industries of Rosyth.

Everyday this bell is rung at 11am, when there is no service, with six rings; in line with the Royal Navy signal or end of the third hour of the forenoon watch. After this an an ex-serviceman or sometimes a serving serviceman will turn the page in the Book of Life. This book lists the names of over 7000 men who died during service after 1914.

It is usually a Virger who rings the bell but anyone who has served in the Royal Navy is entitled to ring it. His Majesty King George VI was one such man.
