There are numerous arteries into the Village of Pittsford, which was incorporated in 1827. The image on this sign depicts a recognizable location on the Erie Canal: Schoen Place. View and photograph this sign from the Pittsford Cemetery.

Of the five buildings in the image, I can identify the current uses of four. Central skyline is a concrete silo that has since been converted to office space, including the insertion of windows. The curved walls would make this very interesting space indeed! The taller structure to the left is the Coal Tower, home to the Coal Tower Restaurant since 1976. The low building in front of the Coal Tower is now a Sinbad's greek restaurant. Center left below the silos is a plaza that includes a shoe store that sells Berkinstock brand shoes, an art gallary, and an ice cream parlor today. The Coal Tower and the silos would have been essential commercial structures for both the Erie Canal and the train station that came in shortly after the Erie Canal. The restaurant would have been an in at this bustling stop on the canal.

Depicted in the canal itself is a packet boat. You can enjoy a packet boat ride today, on the Sam Patch, which has a ticket office at Schoen place (not depicted in the art work is a little booth to the right of the center building depicted).

One of the founders of the village was able to get the Erie Canal routed right through his landholdings, which created a boom-town just as the canal was being built, in a way that neighboring communities never enjoyed.

This sign is perhaps one of the easiest to photograph, because you can pull into the Pittsford Cemetery on either of the Washington St enrances (Rt 153). If you happen to be viewing one of the signs from one of the other roadways entering the village, please provide the coordinates for that sign.
