An alluring hike near the popular Castlewood Canyon State Park, the Mitchell Creek Canyon Trail offers a moderate climb through forests, along a canyon rim and through the high prairie of Colorado. Although the trail begins near Founders Village in Castle Rock, once you hike down into the canyon, you would hardly notice the signs of a metropolitan area so close.
The hike starts out through the riparian woodland at the entrance to Mitchell Creek Canyon.
A quick scramble around some rocky ledges leads to spectacular views from the canyon rim. This trail is even popular in winter among snowshoers.
The trail ends in Gateway Mesa open space park where you can add an additional 2 miles by following the Chuck's Loop Trail or turn around and head back down the canyon.
