Perinton is known as Trail Town USA. They have developed many trail sytems through every part of the town, starting with the Erie Canal Heritage Trail, and ranging from near Pittsford Plaza (see Indian Hill Trailhead), to near Bushnell's Basin (The Crescent Trails). Some of these trails weave through housing developments and cul-de-sacs in a fairly confusing way if it isn't your backyard. Last year, I found that some of the locals had tapped the maple trees in the undevelopable (and so - public) spaces in their neighborhood, andhad buckets hanging from trees to collect the sap.

The multitude of trails is a creative use of topography that could not be used for commercial, agricultural or residential uses. The glacial formations (kames? eskers? drummends?) are sandy hills, that are prone to easy erosion, and so, the brooks and streams have formed deep gullies in spots. Where the trees were allowed to grow, there is some soil stabilization, but rest assured, the old growth forests that existed when this area was pioneer country are gone.

In addition, the township is celebrating its 200th birthday, and boosts that they are "two-time Top 10 winner of CNN/Money Magazine" "Best Place to Live In America" (2005, 2008). Lots to be proud of!
