This is the description found on the Smithsonian website:

"A stout "tree" stands on an oblong, irregularly shaped base. A row of faces is integrated into the sculpted tree on the upper half. There are six faces progressing from eldest to youngest. The youngest, an infant, has the most facial detail and is also the most three-dimensional, as the other faces are reliefs. The infant's head is attached by the chin and back of crown in a cavity on the far right side of the tree." (visit link)

"E. Davis 1988 (On plaque on base:) "FAMILY TREE"/SCULPTURE BY EDDIE DAVIS/Creation of the sculpture "Tree of Life" was funded through/a Rochester Sesquicentennial Arts in the Community grant/in 1984 specially for placement in Highland Park. The/final bronzing of the sculpture was made possible with/public funds for the New York State Council on the Arts./In Monroe County, these funds are administered by Arts for/Greater Rochester as part of the Local Incentive Funding/Test (LIFT). signed"
