In those days, are grandmothers told us, people carried blocks of ice home to provide refrigeration: hence, ice boxes, not refrigerators.
Folks might be interested in the Rube Nelson truss bridge that is a WM just east of here. Ice was carted over what is now a pedestrian bridge to the fruit packing sheds.
