We went to the store to get coordinates and pictures on the 5th annual Record Store Day April 21, 2012. The store was very busy!

The proprietor is Jim Otto, he also hosts a radio show on a local College Radio Station on Sunday afternoons called Reggae Showcase.

"My name is Jim Otto and I opened Sound Spectrum in 1967 and attended the Monterey Pop Festival that year. What an inspiration. Since then we have seen the music business evolve from records to tapes to cds to digital down-loads. We have tried to keep up to these changes but, always made customer interaction our prime driving force. We were one of the first indie stores to report to Soundscan which compiles the national sales charts. We also report to KROQ FM and KSBR FM where for the last 25 years I have broadcast a radio program called the Reggae Showcase every Sunday from 3-6pm. It’s also webcast at www.KSBR.org.

We have been part of Record Store Day and will continue to be this year. Our weekly sales chart is published in the local paper The Laguna Beach Independent were I also write periodical articles and reviews. This year we were voted best record/cd store in the OC Weekly best of issue. Over the years our store has been featured in numerous articles in various publications.

We have an Isis Listening station and a listening station of our own which together hold a total of 24 titles that can be listened to from start to finish. We also carry a wide selection of t-shirts & posters as well as an amazing selection of memorabilia which I have been accumulating since 1967. Lately, I see a ray of hope in the expansion of vinyl sales. Can we expose our customers to the importance of experiencing a musical album in it's entirety and the rewards of taking this journey with the artist?"
