This border crossing lies four or so hours north of Hanoi by bus. There are several names used to describe this crossing, used here are the names used by travellers in the region. Both names refer to the nearby towns on either side of the border.

On the Chinese side is a large, somewhat new building, though looking a little faded at this time. Inside the non-airconditioned facility are the usual officials, bag scanners, forms and necessary bureaucracy to administer a facility such as this. On the Vietnamese side a smaller building, but a similar interior. No photography allowed on either side.

Reaching either border post is easy enough, there are buses and taxis available from the nearby towns, and a bus service from Hanoi. There is little English spoken here, and in fact, few signs of other westerners, not even the usual gaggle of youthful backpackers sitting on the grass talking to each other about their discovery of the 'real' Asia. Expect to be noticed if you visit.
