The Covered Wagon

The Pioneers traveled and shipped freight in covered wagons. This freight wagon is about twice as big as a typical family wagon. Notice it has no front seat and no springs. It would be loaded so full that the teamster would have to walk alongside directing the oxen.

The smaller family wagon could not carry more than 2,000 pounds and most of this had to be food and a few belongings. There was little room for riding. The children almost always walked, often without shoes. The wagon had big wooden hoops called bows that were bent from side to side and put over the top of the wagon bed. Canvas was pulled across the hoops that would keep out the rain, wind, and the hot sunshine. Pioneers would rub oil on the canvas to make it waterproof. Inside the wagon there were many hooks that hung from the wooden hoops. They could hang weapons, clothes, milk cans, and anything else there was room for. When they were on the trail it was very noisy because all the pots and pans were clanging against each other.

The front wheels of the wagon were smaller than the back wheels. This helped the wagon turn. Between the back wheels there was a bucket full of grease hanging from the sxle. This was used on the wheel hubs to make the wheels run smoothly.
