This is a marker from a program that pre-dates the current state Highway Marker program. It was placed in 1928.
The Marker reads:
THIS TABLET MARKS THE SITE OF AN IMPORTANT ARSENAL OF THE CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT. AUTHORIZED BY CONGRESS, 1836; CAPTURED BY NORTH CAROLINA, APRIL 22, 1861; TRANSFERED TO THE CONFEDERATE GOVERNMENT, JUNE 5, 1861; AND DESTROYED BY MAJOR-GENERAL W.T. SHERMAN, MARCH 11-14, 1865ERECTED 1928 BY THE NORTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISION AND THE J.E.B. STUART CHAPTER, UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY
The destruction of the Arsenal was one of General William T. Sherman's primary objectives upon entering North Carolina. To prevent its re-use, General Sherman's troops completely destroyed it over a four day period. Some remains of the Arsenal can be seen nearby by taking the pedestrian bridge behind Poe House over the freeway. There is a North Carolina Civil War Trails interpretive sign near the remains.
