A plaque at the entrance to this hostel has an old photo of the establishment and reads:
"Original Use: Pearl Hotel
Date Opened: 1890
In the 1890s, a local maid (whose identity remains a mystery) visited
Ocean Beach on her day off and bought seven lots for $35. By 1900, the
unlikely landowner opened the Pearl Hotel.
The hotel became Newport Hotel around 1914, and served as Ocean
Beach's main place for visitors to stay while checking out the local dance halls, merry-go-round, skating rink and saltwater plunge.
Many who stayed at "the Newport" ended up moving to Ocean Beach
and used the hotel as a base while shopping for a home to call her own.
In 1995, the building was refurbished as the Ocean Beach International Hostel.
