In Taunton, along Broadway, is the Pilgrim Congregational Church, a beautiful stone structure that was built in 1851 by the church group.
The church is a beautiful stone structure. The church's web site states that it has over 43,388 square feet of stone that weighed 2,889 tons. The structure is rectangular, with a peaked roof and a belfry tower in front. On the sides are stained glass windows. There is a bell that was originally obtained in Holbrook in 1821, and was moved to the present structure in 1851. When facing the front entrance, there are two bronze relief plaques. One is an image of Eliabeth Pole, who was one of the original founders of Taunton. The other shows an historical scene with two Pilgrims and Native American, Squanto, who led them to this area in 1621.
The local church was formed in 1821, which, the web site claims, descended from the first Congregational Church established in Taunton in 1637 with the founding of Taunton. They built a wooden church in 1822. They outgrew that church, and in 1851, they built the present structure. The stained glass windows were added in 1896, made of Tiffany favirle glass.
