An intelligence agent, David Somers, played by Trevor Howard, is sacked and takes a job cataloguing butterflies at the Fenton household. As well as Jess and Nicholas Fenton, there is in the household their niece Sophie, played by Jean Simmons. Sophie has had a bad experience over the death of her parents and is somewhat fragile. Sophie is continually accosted by the handyman Hick, who eventually ends up murdered in the Fenton’s garden. Suspicion falls on Sophie, but David is sceptical and takes Sophie away to London. David’s old employers in the secret service help the police to track the couple. The couple go on the run to Newcastle, the Lake District and Liverpool. At the end of the film it becomes apparent the Nicholas Fenton committed the murder and that of Sophie’s parents. Fenton chases Sophie across station roof tops in the climactic finale before the police and secret service intervene.
The clips in this waymark were taken around the Aira Force Café close to the junction of the A592 and the A5091. The runaway couple are recognised by staff at the café and decide to leave by bus, before returning to climb up Aira Force and escape.
