Everything in Pacific Grove – Butterfly town USA revolves around the
Monarch Butterfly. Butterfly parades,
butterfly sculptures, you name it. Every year, the entire monarch butterfly population undergoes a giant migration from Canada to their overwintering places in Mexico and California. The whole circle takes several generations of butterflies and only the generation staying in the winter quarters lives for longer than a couple of weeks.
The Monarch Sanctuary in Pacific Grove is one of the few overwintering locations and every year from December to February one can watch thousands of butterflies resting in the Eucalyptus trees of the sanctuary. And right at the entrance is a giant monarch butterfly offering rest to the tired visitor. The bench was placed in 2002 by the Natural Resources Committee but unfortunately I couldn’t find out anything about the artist.
There is also used to be a geocache in the sanctuary but it is currently archived.
