Incoming #3 is part of a three-piece series of carvings intended to show a man's reaction to incoming enemy fire during battle. This series, created while (Marty) Miller was studying at BYU, was inspired by his time in Vietnam, where he was in combat on a regular basis. The pieces show the first reaction in fear, the second in action and the third in recovery. #3 depicts a man listening for any further fire before coming out of his protective stance.
