The Hampden Savings Bank was chartered to meet the needs of railroad workers. The original charter was granted in 1852 with the requirement that the bank be no more than 25 rods (ca. 410 feet) from the Western Railroad passenger depot on Lyman Street. Their first office was in the rented basement of the Agawam National Bank on the corner of Lyman and Main Streets. In 1899, needing more space, it relocated to the Fort Block at Main and Front Streets. In In 1918, the Hampden Savings Bank built a new headquarters at 1665 Main Street, a few feet south of its former corner location. They move in 1919 and remained at the Main Street location until a new and larger headquarters was opened, in 1950, on the corner Harrison and Market Streets, a couple of blocks to the south.

The 1918 building, which fronts entirely on Main Street, was designed by architect Max Westhoff in the Classical Revival style. The facade was composed of limestone with a central entrance topped with a pediment containing the sculpture of a beehive, a symbol for industriousness and thrift. Above are large second-storey windows recessed from a pair of Ionic pilasters. Above the windows is inscribed HAMPDEN SAVINGS BANK. Decorated square tablets are symmetrically placed on each corner of the roof line between the inscription INCORPORATED DMCCCLII.

Today, the building houses the law office of Attorney Barry Kaufman.
