Hastings and Poirot are invited to watch Hasting’s friend, Charles Arundel, when he attempts to break a water speed record. The attempt fails when the boat’s engine dies. Charles Arundel is funded by his Aunt Emily. At a reception after the failed attempt Aunt Emily refuses further funding and Charles threatens her.

Emily Arundel falls down the stairs in the night and is fortunate not to be killed. Emily’s dog, Bob sits at the bottom of the stairs and has a party trick where he takes his ball to the top of the stairs and chases down the stairs to catch the ball at the bottom. Bob comes under suspicion of causing Emily’s fall by leaving his ball on the stairs. Poirot is suspicious as he spots a hook in the skirting board at the top of the stairs.

After the near death accident Emily confesses to Poirot that she fears for her life. Poirot advises leaving her fortune to a close friend as a precaution. Unfortunately Emily is poisoned and dies. The local constabulary refuse an autopsy and Emily is buried.

Poirot continues to pursue the case, assisted by Hastings and the dog Bob. It becomes apparent that Emily was poisoned by phosphorus, and that she became ill after drinking a tonic prescribed by Emily’s niece’s husband Jacob Tanios, a greek born doctor. Emily’s niece, Bella, implies that Jacob had access to phosphorus and that he is a wife beater. This is, however, a smoke screen to cover up the fact that Bella is actually the murderess. The crucial piece of evidence is a witness that had seen a dressing gown with the letters TA on it on the night of the attempted murder. Poirot deduces that the initials had been seen in a mirror and they were in fact AT, for Arabella Tanios.

Whilst Dr Tanios is becoming a suspect, he is seen meeting EmilyArundel. He is seen giving her a bottle, designed to make the viewer convinced of Dr Tanios’ guilt.
