A slow moving courtroom drama concerning the poisoning of a blind husband by his wife. Mrs Paradine is accused of murdering her blind husband. Barrister Anthony Keane is hired to defend her and becomes infatuated with her. His infatuation leads him to believe that she is innocent and blinds him to the realities of the case.
Keane takes it upon himself to investigate the dead man’s valet Andre Latour. He travels to the Lake District to investigate the murder scene and investigate Latour. Mrs Paradine warns Keane not to pursue the theory that Latour may have killed Mr Paradine, but Keane ignores her wishes. After fierce cross examination in court Latour kills himself. When Keane calls Mrs Paradine as a defence witness she is so distraught by Latour’s death that she breaks down and confesses to murdering her husband to be with Latour.
Keen takes quite a long trip across the Lake District to get to the Paradine’s home. He starts at the Station Hotel (Drunken Duck at Barngates) and goes via Yew Tree Farm, an (as yet) unknown bridge, Uldale, and finally arrives at the Langdale Chase hotel (the Paradine’s home in reality). Quite a journey! The church in the film shot was demolished several years ago. Many thanks go to Liz and Ray Wilkins who helped to locate this shot.
