Northampton Association of Education and Industry was a Utopian abolitionist community started in the Florence section of Northampton in the 1842. The Association grew and, in 1874, they began to build Cosmian Hall, a meeting center with a large auditorium. For over 70 years audiences were able to hear lectures by speakers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass and Julia Ward Howe. Cosmain Hall was demolished in 1948 and the bell put on display where it once stood.
The bell is suspended on a concrete platform which has the original lintel from COSMIAN HALL, 1878. The bell was cast by Meneelys' of West Troy, NY in 1863. On the far side on the ground in front of the platform are brownstone slabs inscribed: KNIGHTS OF HONOR BLOCK. and 1885.
