Church dates back to Norman times and is built on the site of an earlier Saxon Church. The original Norman part forms the base of the tower and is made of small stones. The upper two tiers of the tower are of stone blocks and addded in the 1500s. There have been additions and restoration over the years. Churchyard is large with about 700 graves and also contains two mining disaster monuments, and the remains of a medieval cross. Tower houses eight bells and a clock.
Cross is GradeII listed-
