Fr. Hoecken was born in 1808 and died in 1851. He was a Roman Catholic priest who traveled the Midwest.
The plaque on the monument reads: In Commemoration of The Missionary Priest Father Christian Hoecken, SJ, 1808-1851, who nearby on June 13, 1840, first administered the Sacrament of Baptism west of the Missouri River, in South Dakota.
Marked by the State Historical Society in 1941.
