Located in Sully County, South Dakota, along US Highway 83, Agar has a population of 69 as of July 2009. This reflects a 16% population drop from the 2000 census.

The area was settled by German, Irish, Norwegian, Russian, Swedish, and Dutch immigrants and the town was incorporated on January 18, 1926.

Agar celebrated its centennial in 2010 with a nice celebration. The schedule of events included a trail ride, a road race, parade, car show, and a tractor pull. Souvenirs were sold including T-shirts, hoodie sweatshirts, and crew neck sweatshirts.

The Agar school closed several years ago and the students combined with Onida, a town about 10 miles to the south.
