This is a large and busy station. It links Hanoi, the capital, with all destinations south. The principal route is along the coast, 1760kms to the southern city of Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). The building was constructed in the days of the French, in 1902 (but no date stones). Since then it has been repaired and rebuilt several times.
The station is a large and sprawling affair. There are, as I understand it, two sections, the larger for southward journeys, a smaller for a few destinations to the north of Hanoi. Moving around the station area is a little tricky as many doors leading out of waiting rooms are locked. I am assuming that this is for passenger safety. You cannot walk to a train or to a track until the train is ready to depart.
No English language signage. Most ticketing (for tourists at least) is done through hotels and travel agencies.
The building has a variety of names. The name used here is the official. Westerners refer to it as the 'Hanoi Train Station'.
