Originally from Guangdong province, with a strong migratory tradition,
the Teochew arrived in France in the 1970s. Most were from the Chinese
diaspora, and were fleeing the civil wars of Cambodia and Vietnam. The
"L’Amicale des Teochew" is a cultural and religious association created in 1986 to favor the social insertion of its members and promote their cultural identity. The first room you enter is a meeting place, where members of the community go to chat, read the paper and sip tea. On the right is the large prayer room, covered with carpets. On the main altar there are three Buddhas - known as the Three Jewels, as well as the Buddhist triad - the three bodies of the Buddha. Further ahead, laid out on a table, are the specific instruments reserved for the officiants. The altar is surrounded by gold maxims embroidered on a red background, as well as two pyramids containing the lamps of the light of Buddha. In the hall are also the eighteen Luohan, immortal guardians and protectors of the law, and one wall bears an extraordinary fresco of Avalokitésvara, the deity considered the personification of mercy and compassion.
