Just west of the Maryland State House at 100 State Cirle, Annapolis, MD is a wonderful memorial to Chief Justice Thurgood Marshall and his life long work for school integration. This bench with two young school-aged children sitting on it represents Thurgood Marshall's winning the case of Brown vs. Board of Education which ended the separate but equal ruling the Supreme Court had handed down years before. This case allowed the integration of all school systems. The children on this bench represent the right of children to attend school regardless of race. This is one of two sit-by-me benches that Toby Mendez, the designer and sculptor of the memorial, designed to represent the significant victories Thurgood Marshall made in his fight for school integration.
