"The Virgin River runs from central Utah to Lake Mead in southern Nevada. On its course it cuts through the Beaver Dam Mountain range and creates spectacular gorge. The gorge is actually located in the northwest corner of Arizona and exposes several beds of rock that lace the steep walls. Virgin River Gorge is what separates the Utah desert from the one time marsh area in southeast Nevada now known as the Virgin Valley. There are a few spots to stop and marvel at this region. The Virgin River Campground is rarely crowded and a nice place to use as a base to hike and explore.

Take I-15 north through Mesquite and into Arizona. This is a scenic drive so once you enter the mountain area, you are there. This is a very windy road, so make sure that the driver is driving and not rubber necking." (visit link)

The "forgotten" Arizona Interstate. Hardly anyone will list this one when asked what Interstates run through Arizona. It crosses a very remote area of the Arizona Strip, northwest of the Grand Canyon. I-15 is not reachable by paved road from the rest of the state. I-15 replaced US 91 as the route from Las Vegas to St. George, but took a different alignment. Instead of curving north at Littlefield, I-15 climbs through the Virgin River Gorge, winding along the canyon over the river. Some of the bridges straddling the river are over 800 feet long, and nearly touch the canyon walls on either side of the highway. It's a spectacular sight, but you have to enjoy it at 55mph, as no stopping is permitted. (visit link)

You can experience this canyon by more than just your windshield on I-15, by taking exit 18, where you'll find the BLM Virgin River Canyon Recreation Area, which has a riverside campsite (the Cedar Pockets Campground), picnic areas and several nature trails.
