This building was opened in 1960. It replaced the old city hall which was located on James St. N. The address (73 Main St) was choosen to mark the number of years that old city hall was in service. Designed by Stanley Roscoe the building has a distinct International style similar to the UN.
The hall has a variety of features, most notably the clocks which are on both sides of the building. There are also several beautiful founatains and Italian style tile mosaics. The building was designated a heritage building by Hamilton in 2006. The hall underwent several interior renovations from 2008 to 2010.
Around the hall are several notable attractions. Right beside the hall is the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Across the street is the Hamilton Art Gallery and Hamilton Place Theatre. There are also several community monuments near the building including one to workers who have died on the job.
