The town of Jenks sits on the southwest edge of the Tulsa metropolitan area. It was developed in 1904 by the Midland Valley Railroad as a railway community, and named for William Henry Jenks, owner of the railroad. It is one of Oklahoma's fastest growing towns, having grown in population by almost 7400 residents in the decade from 2000 to 2010. The town is located on the west bank of the Arkansas River. As you cross the river from Tulsa on East 96th Street South (Main Street Jenks) the road splits and in the median directly ahead stands this lovely wood lighthouse.
The lighthouse is approximately forty feet high, a square wood clapboard structure with a brick base, surrounded by trees and gardens. The lighthouse was built as a Welcome Sign as it sits just back from the banks of the Arkansas River. On the east side, facing the river, the word "WELCOME" is formed in an arch. Beneath that a semi-circular area says "JENKS AMERICA." A drawing of a steam locomotive symbolizes the settlement of the town as a railroad community.
