Eleven depicted preserved Cypro-Corinthian columns you can find in lower part of Kourion (Curium in Latin) archaeological site in Cyprus, place where was centre of ancient city-kingdom founded in the 12th century B.C.
Destroyed in a cataclysmic eathquake in 365 A.D. the ancient city kingdom of Kourion is located above the Kouris river near Limassol in the west part of Cyprus. Archaelogical evidence and historical sources prove that Kourion was one of the most important ancient kingdoms of Cyprus.
The depicted object with well preserved eleven Cypro-Corinthian columns (with slightly different capitals in comparison with richly decorated pure-Corinthian) is located circa 400 meters westward from the famous Theatre, in the lower part of former city. Probably it was also temple... This part of Kourion excavation site is still protected by fence, so you can not go inside the depicted ruins.
The excavated remains of Kourion comprise several notable monuments: of the Theatre, the Early Christian basilica, the Nymphaeum, the Fountain House, the Forum, the House of the Achilles, the House of the Gladiators, the House of Eustolios, and the Public Baths of the Town. According to Herodotos, who lived at the beginning of the 5th century B.C., the two known kings of Kourion were Damasos, who lived in the beginning of the 7th century B.C., the other being Stasanor or Stisinor.
