Built on the site of a previous 16th century gateway, this stone/flint archway was built in 1862, during the ongoing Victorian restoration of St Mary of Charity Church, a medieval church that was within what had been the precincts of Faversham Abbey, founded in 1147 by King Stephen. Greatly altered and enlarged in the Victorian period, it is now one of the largest churches in Kent.
