Das vom Architekten Dieter Kälberer entworfene Rathaus und der Friedensplatz wurden am 16. Juni 1989 eingeweiht. Im Zentrum des Platzes steht die von der Berliner Bildhauerin Susanne Wehland gestaltete Friedenssäule, auf der in vergoldeten Buchstaben das Wort „Frieden“ in den Sprachen der Dortmunder Partnerstädte (Stand 1989) zu lesen ist.

It was designed by architect Dieter Kälberer City Hall and the Square of Peace on 16 Inaugurated in June 1989. In the center of the square stands the Berlin designed by sculptor Susan Wehland Peace Column, read on to the golden letters in the word "peace" in the languages ??of the partner cities of Dortmund (as of 1989).
