Established in 1822 under Gen. Zachary Taylor as a major American fort on the southwestern frontier. It later became known as the Cradle of the Mexican War.

Built in 1822, the fort was put in place to guard the "Neutral Strip" with the Spanish Territory - an area of dispute between the US (and the newly purchased Louisiana Territory) and Spain, until the border was set by treaty in 1819. The fort was used until abandoned in 1846.
