Watchtower build during the "Cold War" to watch out for enemy planes that were flying beneath the reach of the radar
Airwatchtower in Echten (Drenthe). Build in 1953 as one 138 watchtowers in a network of 276 posts during the "cold war". To detect enemy plaines that flew beneath the radar.
As camouflage there were planted trees around the towers.
The height is 21 meters, the building material concrete. In 1953 it cost FL 17,500 Dutch Guilders to build this one. The owner is Staatsbosbeheer and is an Provincial Monument. It is not accessible. At this moment it is only visible from the road.
There are about 10 of this towers left in the Netherlands, most of them in bad state.
In Drenthe there can be found an other one: in Oosterbeek.
