This is a bust of the French botanist Jean Baptiste Louis Pierre (1833-1905), located just inside the entrance to the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The bust is constructed from what looks to be sandstone, and is ~twice life-sized. This is a commemorative statue. Pierre founded the zoo in 1864, and was the first curator.

Baptiste was born in France, developed an interest in Asian zoology, and spent some years in India. He then travelled to French Indochina, where he continued his research interests. He is survived by several genera named in his honour, and a solid body of research publications.

This bus was dedicated in 1933.
