This marker is for Col. Benjamin Garland who was a minuteman and part of a committee of three charged with enlisting other men from Rye, New Hampshire, where he was an inn keeper and land owner. The grave is located near the Congregational Church.

"Col. Benjamin Garland - Born Oct. 29, 1734, son of John and Elizabeth; died May 2, 1802. Married Dec. 5, 1757, Sarah Jenness (Apr. 25, 1736 - Feb. 18, 1803). Residence, Rye Center, N.H., innkeeper. Owned much land and property all over Rye; was in service at Ft. William and Mary, 1708, under the Crown; was a Minute Man in the Revolutionary War.
May 16, 1775, Col. Benjamin Garland, Col. Peter Garland, and Joseph Parsons were “made three of a committee of seven to enlist, arm, employ, send out and discharge the minute men of Rye.” Feb. 1781, Col. Benjamin Garland, Joseph Parsons and Peter Garland were “made three of a committee of seven to get soldiers and hire men for the Continental Army.” He had ten children, of whom the seventh was Amos."
